"Andrew Downes had a serious fall on Thursday morning and was taken to hospital with severe back pain. An MRI scan showed that he had badly fractured his lower spine, so he underwent major back surgery on Friday night. The operation was successful, and he is in amazing spirits considering what he has been through. He has lost the majority of feeling in his legs and he has been told there is only a very slim chance he will fully regain use of his legs. He has a long road to recovery and will shortly move to a Spinal Rehabilitation Unit in either Stoke Manderville or Oswestry and will know by this time next year how much feeling he will have back in his legs. We have been extremely grateful for the level of my Dad's care at the High Dependency Unit at the Royal Orthopaedic hospital and for all the support from friends and family."
