Messen und Sonaten

Andrew Downes (Copyright Andrew Downes) CRC1009-2

This recording features two Sonatas by Andrew Downes. The Sonata for Four Horns* is the first of many works for horns by Andrew Downes. It has three movements, the second of which, often without time signature, is derived from Gregorian plainsong. The Sonata for Piano no.1** is also in three movements. It has a particularly exciting last movement with constantly changing metres. In both the Sonata for Four Horns and the Sonata for Piano no.1, the slow introduction to the first movement is recapitulated towards the end of the last movement.

* Performed by Roland Fritsch, Suzanne Langor, James Lowe, and Roland Horvath.

Conducted by Werner Pelinka.

** Performed by Anne Madison (piano).
