Piano Sonatina / Piano Sonatas 1&2

Andrew Downes (Copyright Andrew Downes)

Andrew Downes’ Sonatina for Piano*, whilst rich in difficult technical passages, is immensely rewarding to play and thoroughly repays time spent in addressing its specific challenges. Duncan Honeybourne gave the first broadcast performance, from Birmingham, on BBC Radio 3 in July 2001.

Piano Sonata no 1* was first performed by Malcolm Wilson in Birmingham in 1978. Since then it has received numerous performances, and attracted widespread praise for its beauty and originality, the late and much lamented John Ogden having been among its many admirers. Duncan Honeybourne first performed the work at the Three Choirs Festival in Hereford in August 2000. Piano Sonata no.2* was composed for Duncan

Honeybourne and completed in November 2002.
